It’s summer, and I’m all for people doing whatever it takes to protect themselves from the sun. That means sunscreen, covering up, and more sunscreen. And for extra face protection, that probably means a hat. The good news for guys is that, unlike most accessories, you often have a bigger pool to choose from than us ladies when it comes to hats. However, there is one kind of hat that I would strongly recommend you do your best to avoid.
Fedoras are one of those things that a lot of guys think are really cool, when in reality, they usually make you look pretty uncool. I know that might be an unpopular opinion, but I’m pretty set in it. I think they look dorky, they’re outdated, and they show a general lack of creativity. And when they’re paired with other summer wardrobe missteps, like socks and sandals, manpris (capris for men), or Hawaiian shirts, your whole look goes even further south.
Like any suggestion that something isn’t working, it’s always nice to have a counter-suggestion, so here it is. I’ve rounded up five hats that will make you look much cooler than your run-of-the-mill fedora, while still showing off a little personality. If you still find yourself reaching for that fedora at the end of this post, just give yourself a little more time to come around. Trust me – you’ll look better for it.
Trilby Panama hat
This hat somewhat resembles a fedora, but it is a Panama hat – the fedora’s better looking, more mature cousin.
Gap baseball cap
Regular baseball caps are boring. This one, with its straw brim and fun print, is anything but boring.
Topman pork pie hat
This hat is for the guy who loves a vintage look. It’s the perfect topper for a seersucker suit.
H&M bucket hat
In a playful pineapple print, this hat is a little more youthful and fun. And if you’re not feeling the fruit, you can flip it over and go with solid navy.
Pas Normal Studios cycling hat
If you cycle, this one’s for you. And even if you don’t, you’ll still look super put together, and very European.
