Transition To Fall With A Classic White Button-Down

If summer is all about white t-shirts, then fall, and whatever is in between, is all about the white button-down. Crisp and tailored, they look great under sweaters, tucked into shorts and skirts, and over black leggings. But just because these shirts are inspired by suiting and menswear, it doesn’t mean they have to lack femininity or originality.

It’s also about what you pair your white shirt with. A flirty skirt will soften it, while tucking it into high-waisted trousers will keep it classic and perfect for the office. The trick is to find one with a little something extra, like stitching detail or deconstruction. There is nothing worse than that boring, literal cut with a slight flair at the hips to make it more “feminine.” That never works.

What you want is something edgy, with maybe a hint of colour, and as much personality as you can find without making it look like you’re trying too hard. A white button-down shirt can be the perfect balance of classic tailoring and an expression of personal style. Just make sure your shirt is always well pressed or steamed, and maybe even break out the spray starch if you need to. And be careful not to wear it to a messy dinner, or at least invest in a bleach stick. Keep that shirt looking fresh!

The detail on the collar bones of this shirt and the dropped hem in the back are a nice twist on an otherwise typical white shirt.

This shirt is perfect for pairing with leggings – it lets you have a lazy day but still look totally put together.

The pleating on the front of this shirt is inspired by a tuxedo shirt, and its lack of collar gives it another twist.

Straight blue stripes that are well-spaced out spice up this button-down without making it look too much like jammies.

Don’t find that a usual white shirt keeps you warm enough? This heavier one is made of flannel, which means you might not even have to layer.

If you can’t tell exactly what the pattern is on this shirt, all the better. It’s subtle bunnies, and it makes a plain white shirt super cute.

Kimonos were super trendy this summer, and now you can mirror their sleeves with this white shirt.
